A Kensington board position must remain usable for operation, inspection and maintenance after the joinery is finished. We coordinate the proposed enclosure and circuit arrangement with the available space; relocation or additional distribution is assessed and quoted separately where needed.
For a refurbishment or rewire, we specify the consumer unit alongside the proposed circuits, assessed demand and incoming supply. The board, protective devices and circuit schedule form part of the installation design.
Replacing an existing fuse box is a different scope from rewiring the property. We assess the circuits that will remain and explain any required remedial work; a new board does not renew hidden cables.
An additional board or a different position may be considered for the agreed project. Suitability depends on the supply, circuit design, access and installation conditions. It is assessed and quoted, not assumed to be necessary.

A quotation for your installation
The quotation depends on whether this is a new consumer unit installation or a replacement, the circuit schedule, protection required and any agreed wiring or access work. These items are explained before installation; a board-only price should not be assumed to include new circuits or remedial work.
The enclosure is only one part of the price. A useful quotation accounts for the installation it will serve, the protection specified and the work needed to complete the change safely.

Ask what is included, what is excluded and how any further findings would be handled. An initial discussion supported by photographs is useful, but a photograph cannot confirm the condition of concealed wiring or replace the necessary on-site assessment.
You do not need to be undertaking a full refurbishment to enquire. A standalone fuse board replacement can be assessed on its own requirements.
A board tucked into a hallway cupboard can look straightforward to replace until the available space is measured. The new enclosure may have different dimensions, cable-entry positions and access requirements. Its suitability cannot be judged from the cupboard opening alone.
Before settling on an arrangement, we consider the mounting surface, the cables approaching the unit and the space needed to install, inspect and operate it. A door that closes neatly is only part of a workable result.
Where fitted joinery surrounds the board, agree any alterations before installation. That includes who will adjust shelves or panels, whether finishes will be disturbed and who is responsible for making good. These items should be explicit in the quotation rather than assumed to be included.
Moving the consumer unit is a separate consideration. A different position may require cable alterations and affect the work elsewhere in the property. If you are redesigning the cupboard, speak to us before its final dimensions are fixed.

In a flat, access to the consumer unit may be simple while access to the supply is less straightforward. The meter or isolation arrangements may be outside the property, behind a locked communal door or subject to building-management procedures.
Tell us about those arrangements early. We can establish what access is needed and whether another responsible party must be involved before an installation date is agreed. Equipment belonging to the network operator, electricity supplier or building is not automatically part of a flat's consumer unit replacement.
For managed properties, include permitted working hours and contractor-access requirements with your enquiry. Organising keys, permissions and relevant contact details helps avoid delays outside the flat.
Replacing the consumer unit does not, by itself, mean replacing every cable in the home. Existing circuits may be retained where assessment and testing establish that they are suitable for the proposed arrangement. Necessary repairs should be identified rather than hidden within a vague promise of an upgrade.

For a planned replacement, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is strongly recommended to identify problems before the changeover. If you do not have a recent report, we will discuss the assessment needed before proceeding.

Agree the access and the interruption
The electrical supply will need to be interrupted during the replacement. Discuss the expected working period and the likely outage before the appointment, particularly if anyone relies on electrically powered medical equipment or other essential services.
Testing may also require access to rooms, sockets and other points beyond the consumer unit. Clearing the cupboard is helpful, but it may not provide all the access the electrician needs.
Let us know about home-working arrangements, alarms or equipment that needs a controlled shutdown. The programme should allow for inspection, testing and any agreed remedial work, as well as fitting the board. The actual duration depends on the installation and findings, so a fixed restoration time should not be assumed in advance.
The specification should make sense for your installation, not simply list a collection of abbreviations.
An RCD provides residual-current protection to reduce electric-shock risk. An RCBO combines that function with overload and short-circuit protection for an individual circuit. An arrangement using individual RCBOs can help limit how much of the home loses power when a circuit trips.
A surge protection device (SPD) serves a different purpose: it helps protect against transient overvoltages. It does not replace the other protective devices.
We explain the proposed arrangement and any relevant limitations. The replacement work must meet the applicable requirements of BS 7671; the final selection depends on the installation being assessed.

At completion, you should be able to identify the circuits and understand the new arrangement. We provide the Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), with the relevant inspection and test records, and explain the controls and operating guidance for the installed equipment.
A domestic consumer unit replacement in England is notifiable under Building Regulations. PEP arranges the applicable notification, with the Building Regulations compliance documentation forming a separate record from the EIC.
Keep these documents with the property's electrical records. They describe the completed work; they do not mean that every part of the home's wiring has been renewed.
