01 · Understand the installation
You may be replacing an old fuse box, planning new circuits or responding to concerns raised during electrical work. Whatever prompted the enquiry, the starting point is the same: establish what your home needs before choosing the equipment.
We discuss the installation as it stands and any changes you already have in mind. A home with no planned alterations needs a different conversation from a flat about to receive a new kitchen, electric heating or additional lighting.
An old fuse box or plastic consumer unit is not, by itself, proof that replacement is compulsory. Condition, protection and suitability matter; this assessment-based approach is reflected in Electrical Safety First’s consumer unit replacement guidance.
Our role is to make the options understandable, whether the answer is a board replacement, a targeted repair or a wider package of electrical improvements.
02 · A clear scope, before a price
The quotation depends on whether this is a new consumer unit installation or a replacement, the circuit schedule, protection required and any agreed wiring or access work. These items are explained before installation; a board-only price should not be assumed to include new circuits or remedial work.
The cost of replacing a fuse box depends on the installation around it, not simply the price of the enclosure. Two properties with the same number of bedrooms can have very different circuits, access arrangements and associated work.

If the board sits inside fitted joinery, tell us before the visit. A cupboard alteration or decorative repair should not become an unspoken assumption in an electrical quotation.
We explain known additional work before booking the replacement. If further defects emerge, we discuss the findings, safety implications and proposed next steps rather than quietly expanding the job.
03 · The flat and the wider building
In an Earl’s Court conversion or mansion flat, the board inside your home may be some distance from the meter or the equipment needed to disconnect its supply. Booking access to the flat alone may not be enough.
Before agreeing the installation date, we establish which equipment serves your home, how authorised isolation will be arranged and whether access to a communal cupboard or another controlled area is required.
The consumer unit, electricity meter and main supply fuse are not interchangeable terms. Responsibilities differ, as UK Power Networks explains. Work involving metering or network equipment may need the relevant supplier, operator or responsible party.
A replacement inside your flat does not automatically include renewal of a communal rising main, the building’s distribution equipment or its supply capacity. Any such work needs its own assessment and agreement.
The purpose is straightforward: arrange the right access and responsibilities before your electricity is switched off.
04 · Retain what is suitable. Resolve what is not.
Often, a consumer unit can be replaced without rewiring the entire property. That decision must follow an assessment, not an assumption based on the appearance of the board.
Suitable existing circuits can remain. Defects presenting immediate or potential danger must be resolved, or the affected circuits left disconnected. A new enclosure is not a repair for defective wiring.

05 · Different devices. Different jobs.
A well-specified consumer unit brings together different forms of protection. They do different jobs; adding more devices does not remove the need for sound wiring and correct installation.
An RCBO combines residual-current and overcurrent protection for an individual circuit. A suitable circuit-by-circuit arrangement can help limit the disruption caused by a fault, rather than grouping several circuits behind one shared RCD.
A surge protective device helps limit transient overvoltages that could damage connected equipment. It is a different function from overload or residual-current protection, not a substitute for either.
AFDDs detect certain dangerous electrical arcing conditions. Their inclusion depends on the applicable requirements and installation design; they are not automatically a universal requirement for every home.

06 · Space, access and everyday use
Keeping the board in its existing position may be the simplest option, but the replacement must suit the available space and remain accessible.
We consider the enclosure dimensions, cable entry, working access and the position of nearby shelves, doors and other services. The front needs to remain usable after the electrician has left, not disappear behind a newly fitted storage unit.
If moving the consumer unit would improve the arrangement, we discuss the additional work involved. Cable extensions, new routes and changes to joinery or finishes belong in the scope from the outset.

07 · A practical plan for an occupied home
Consumer unit replacement requires a planned interruption to the affected electricity supply. We discuss the expected working period after assessing the installation, rather than promising the same duration for every home.
Let us know about working-from-home arrangements, electrically powered medical equipment, access systems or any other essential electrical dependency. Alternative arrangements need to be settled beforehand.
Testing also requires access beyond the board. Tell us about locked rooms, tenants, fitted furniture or areas that may be difficult to reach.
For a managed building, we agree the relevant contact, access arrangements and permitted working hours. This helps turn an appointment into a workable plan.
08 · From your enquiry to the handover
Tell us what has prompted the replacement, your full postcode and whether the property is occupied or undergoing refurbishment. Include any known faults and planned electrical additions.
We review the existing installation, access and proposed equipment. The quotation separates the board replacement from other agreed repairs or alterations, with responsibilities and exclusions made clear.
We agree access, protect the immediate work area and organise the shutdown. If external attendance is needed, it must be coordinated with the replacement rather than left until installation day.
Our electrician carries out the isolation, replacement and verification. The work is designed and assessed against the applicable BS 7671 requirements, with any findings that affect completion explained to you.
We identify the circuits, explain the controls and provide the relevant records. You should finish with a clear understanding of the installation, not just a new box on the wall.
09 · Verification and documentation
PEP is registered under the NICEIC Domestic Installer Scheme.
Consumer unit replacement in a dwelling in England is notifiable work under Building Regulations. Our handover includes the Electrical Installation Certificate, with the relevant inspection and test schedules, and arrangements for the separate Building Regulations notification and compliance documentation.
The EIC records the electrical work and verification. Building Regulations compliance documentation records the notification through the applicable route. They serve different purposes, and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate is not the appropriate substitute for an EIC for this replacement.

10 · Standalone upgrade or wider project
If you are already renovating, bring the proposed electrical layout into the discussion early. Appliance requirements, lighting arrangements and heating controls can affect the circuits the new board needs to accommodate.

Allowing sensible spare space can support future plans, but spare ways in a consumer unit do not increase the available incoming supply capacity. Additional demand still needs assessment.

Before you book
Not necessarily. The cause may be an appliance, wiring fault or another issue outside the board. Replacement should follow diagnosis where tripping is the concern. Our guide to an RCD that keeps tripping explains the distinction.
Electrical Safety First recommends an EICR before a planned replacement. If one is declined, its guidance requires a pre-work survey. An assessment cannot simply be skipped; the appropriate checks and scope need agreeing before installation.
That depends on the lease, the work and any shared access or equipment affected. Check the relevant requirements before booking. The Leasehold Advisory Service explains when consent may be needed. Building Regulations compliance does not replace a separate consent required by your lease.
