We establish what your existing board supplies, assess the installation and explain the proposed work before arranging the changeover. You know what is included, how the power interruption will affect you and which records you will receive afterwards.

Whether you own a house near Parsons Green, a converted flat in Munster Village or an apartment in Sands End, the starting point is the installation you have—not a standard package selected from a photograph.

01 · Start with the reason for change

Does the fuseboard need replacing—or does the fault need finding?

The starting point is the installation you have.

An older fuse box may have remained in place through several changes of ownership, kitchen alterations and additions to the wiring. Replacing it can be an opportunity to improve protection and make the circuit arrangement easier to understand. The first question, however, is what the work needs to achieve.

Replacement may be appropriate where the equipment is damaged, the protective arrangement needs improvement or proposed alterations cannot be accommodated suitably.

Age or a plastic enclosure alone does not establish that replacement is necessary. Electrical Safety First makes this distinction in its consumer unit replacement guidance.

Repeated tripping also needs investigation. Changing the board will not repair a faulty appliance or damaged cable elsewhere. Our guide to why an RCD keeps tripping explains the diagnostic starting point.

Tell us what prompted your enquiry. We can then help distinguish a focused board replacement from repairs or more extensive electrical work.

02 · One replacement. Four clear boundaries.

Know what changes at the board—and what does not

A useful quotation separates four parts of the job:

Part of the installationWhat needs to be clear
The consumer unitThe replacement enclosure, protective devices, circuit arrangement and identification.
Existing wiringWhich circuits can remain and whether identified defects require repairs before reconnection.
The incoming supplyWhether isolation or supply-related work needs separate coordination with the relevant provider.
Access and finishesWorking space, cupboards, cable routes, relocation and any making good included or excluded.

This prevents a board replacement being mistaken for a whole-house rewire—or for work on the electricity meter and incoming supply.

For a fuller comparison, read our guide to consumer unit replacement or a full rewire.

03 · A quotation for the completed work

Consumer unit replacement cost in Fulham

The price should describe the completed work, not simply the box being fitted.

We base the quotation on the number and condition of the circuits, the proposed protective devices, access to the board and any associated work. A straightforward replacement in an accessible position is a different job from relocating a board, altering cable routes or addressing defects in existing wiring.

Before you book, the scope should make clear:

  • The consumer unit and protective arrangement being supplied.
  • Installation, circuit identification, testing and certification.
  • Any known repairs or changes to earthing and protective bonding.
  • Whether additional circuits or relocation are included.
  • Responsibility for external appointments and associated charges.
  • Any making good, decoration or joinery work, and the VAT position.

If further defects become apparent during the work, we explain the findings and proposed next steps. Necessary safety measures and additional remedial work are discussed clearly; unsafe circuits are not simply reconnected to keep an appointment on schedule.

04 · Your home shapes the changeover

Houses and maisonettes

In a house around Peterborough Estate or Bishops Park, the board may serve equipment added at different stages. We discuss how the home is used and any planned kitchen, heating or extension work so the replacement is considered alongside your actual requirements.

The position matters too. We review the working space and surrounding finishes rather than assuming the new enclosure will fit inside an existing cupboard unchanged.

Converted flats

For a flat around Fulham Broadway or Munster Village, access may extend beyond the front door. The meter or supply isolation point could be in a communal area, and the private installation needs to be distinguished from equipment serving the building.

We establish the relevant arrangements before fixing the programme, including who can provide access and authorise work outside the flat where necessary.

Managed apartments

For an apartment in Sands End or Imperial Wharf, tell us about managing-agent requirements, permitted working hours and arrangements for accessing electrical cupboards.

These details help coordinate the visit. Replacing your apartment’s consumer unit does not automatically include alterations to the building’s communal distribution system.

05 · More than a new enclosure

Protection selected for the circuits you use

Appropriate protection. A clearly defined specification.

The enclosure is only part of the specification. The devices inside it must be selected for the installation and used in a compatible arrangement.

An RCD detects certain leakage currents and disconnects the affected supply. It is not, by itself, overload protection.

An RCBO combines residual-current and overcurrent protection for an individual circuit. Separating circuits in this way can help prevent a fault on one circuit from interrupting several others, although it cannot guarantee uninterrupted power elsewhere.

A surge protective device, or SPD, helps limit transient overvoltages that can damage equipment. It performs a different role from an RCD or RCBO.

Where arc fault detection is relevant, we assess the requirements for AFDD protection as part of the specification. These functions are also outlined in NICEIC’s consumer unit guidance.

We explain the arrangement proposed for your home, including sensible provision for future circuits where appropriate. More spare ways in a board do not, however, increase the capacity of the incoming electricity supply.

06 · Before the power goes off

Plan the power interruption before installation day

Consumer unit replacement involves disconnecting the supply serving the work. The programme needs to allow for inspection and testing as well as the physical installation.

Before the appointment, we discuss the expected interruption and any dependencies within the home. Tell us about home working, alarms, refrigeration, heating controls and equipment that must remain available. If anyone depends on electrically powered medical equipment, raise this before a date is agreed so appropriate arrangements can be considered.

The area around the board needs to be accessible, but you should not remove electrical covers or interfere with supply equipment to prepare for us.

Where an isolator or an external appointment is needed, this must be coordinated rather than assumed to be part of a same-day visit. UK Power Networks explains the distinction between supply equipment, isolation and the consumer unit.

07 · The changeover, step by step

From the first enquiry to the final circuit label

  1. Understand the starting point. We discuss the reason for replacement, the property and any planned changes. Photographs help prepare for the assessment; they do not replace it.
  2. Assess and agree the work. The relevant installation is checked, the protective arrangement is specified and the scope, access requirements and programme are agreed.
  3. Carry out the changeover. We isolate the installation safely, replace the board and carry out the agreed associated work, taking care around the working area and retained finishes.
  4. Inspect, test and identify. The work is verified, circuit identification is completed and any findings affecting the agreed scope are explained.
  5. Hand over clearly. We explain the new board, the documentation and any recommendations requiring attention after the visit.

The aim is a practical result: a board you can identify, records you can keep and a clear understanding of what has been completed.

08 · A verified and documented finish

Testing, certification and Building Regulations

PEP is registered under the NICEIC Domestic Installer Scheme. Replacement work is specified and verified against the applicable edition of BS 7671.

The handover includes an Electrical Installation Certificate, with the relevant inspection schedules, circuit details and test results. The certificate describes the work undertaken; it is not a claim that every existing cable and accessory has been renewed.

Consumer unit replacement in a dwelling in England is notifiable work under Part P. We arrange the relevant notification through our registration scheme. The Building Regulations compliance documentation is separate from the electrical installation certificate. See Approved Document P.

Keep both with the property’s electrical records. We explain any recorded observations and the scope they relate to.

09 · Allow for the work you already have planned

Changing the kitchen or planning other electrical work?

Tell us about proposed appliances, additional circuits and changes to the layout before the board is specified. Coordinating the decisions can avoid fitting equipment without allowing for already-planned work.

We can discuss the wider requirement through our electrical services in Fulham. Where the wiring itself needs substantial renewal, full house rewiring in Fulham is a separate scope to consider.

A replacement board is neither a substitute for necessary rewiring nor a reason to replace suitable wiring unnecessarily.

Before you book

Questions about replacing your fuse box

Can you replace the consumer unit without rewiring the whole property?

Yes, where assessment confirms the existing circuits are suitable for reconnection. Some installations need selected repairs rather than a complete rewire. We explain the findings and distinguish those repairs from the board replacement itself.

Does a plastic fuse box have to be replaced?

Not solely because it is plastic. Its condition, protection and suitability for the installation need assessment. Requirements for a newly installed consumer unit do not automatically make every older board unusable.

Do I need an EICR before the work?

Electrical Safety First strongly recommends an EICR before a planned replacement. Where one is declined, a pre-work survey is still required; the replacement should not proceed without an appropriate assessment. An EICR is different from the installation certificate issued for the completed replacement.

How long will the replacement take?

We advise on the expected programme after reviewing the installation. Circuit count, access, testing and associated repairs affect the time needed. The power-off period and any dependencies on outside appointments are discussed before booking.

Will a new consumer unit stop the electricity tripping?

Only if the proposed work addresses the actual cause. An appliance fault, damaged wiring or an issue elsewhere can still require investigation and repair. A replacement is not a universal remedy for repeated tripping.

Can the board be moved to a better position?

Potentially, but relocation needs its own assessment. Cable routes, access, the proposed position, supply arrangements and making good can all affect the scope. We do not assume that moving a board is included in a like-for-like replacement quotation.

Will it give me more power for new appliances?

Not automatically. Space for extra circuits is different from available supply capacity. Proposed appliances and their demand need assessment; any necessary supply upgrade is a separate matter.

Do you undertake standalone fuseboard replacements?

Yes. You do not need to combine the work with a refurbishment or a larger electrical project. We can assess and quote for the consumer unit replacement and the associated work it requires.
