A fuseboard upgrade planned around the home you live in.
PEP provides consumer unit installation and replacement in St John’s Wood NW8. We plan new boards for residential refurbishment and rewiring work and replace existing fuse boxes, with assessment, suitable circuit protection, testing and certification included in the agreed work.
You may be acting on an inspection report, looking to improve electrical protection or making arrangements for a home you have recently bought. We help you understand what needs replacing, what can remain and how the work will affect your day.

New installation · Replacement · Planned alterations
For an occupied St John’s Wood house or flat, we agree access and the expected interruption to power as part of the installation plan. Where a refurbishment changes the circuit requirements, the board specification follows the agreed design rather than simply copying the old layout.
For a refurbishment or rewire, we specify the consumer unit alongside the proposed circuits, assessed demand and incoming supply. The board, protective devices and circuit schedule form part of the installation design.
Replacing an existing fuse box is a different scope from rewiring the property. We assess the circuits that will remain and explain any required remedial work; a new board does not renew hidden cables.
An additional board or a different position may be considered for the agreed project. Suitability depends on the supply, circuit design, access and installation conditions. It is assessed and quoted, not assumed to be necessary.
An older fuse box can still be supplying a home long after kitchens, heating systems and room layouts have changed. That makes it worth understanding the installation behind it, rather than judging it by its age or appearance alone.
Reasons to consider replacement include deterioration, limitations in the existing protective arrangement or findings from an electrical inspection. Planned alterations may also call for a different board specification.
A fault does not always mean the whole consumer unit needs changing. If a circuit repeatedly trips, the cause may lie in wiring, a connection or an appliance. We distinguish a problem that needs investigation from a board that needs replacing.
If you are unsure which applies, describe what has happened. Our electrical services in St John’s Wood also cover wider electrical work, so the conversation can start with the problem rather than a predetermined solution.
Losing power affects more than the lights. It can interrupt heating controls, internet access, cooking and the ordinary routines of a busy household.
After assessing the installation, we can talk through the expected power-off period and arrange the work. The appointment needs to allow for isolation, installation and verification before the affected circuits return to use.
Tell us if someone works from home, if an entry system relies on electricity or if any essential equipment needs a separate plan. Knowing this beforehand helps us agree a workable appointment and identify any arrangements you need to make.
There is no assumption that the property must be empty. Equally, being able to remain at home does not mean you can rely on your usual electrical services throughout the work. We explain the expected conditions so you can decide what suits your household.
A defined quotation
The quotation depends on whether this is a new consumer unit installation or a replacement, the circuit schedule, protection required and any agreed wiring or access work. These items are explained before installation; a board-only price should not be assumed to include new circuits or remedial work.
The useful starting point for a price is a defined job: which board is changing, which circuits it serves and what must be done to complete the replacement properly.
Your quotation takes account of:
Two boards that look similar from the outside can involve different amounts of work. We explain the proposed scope and any exclusions so you can compare quotations on more than the enclosure and labour alone.
If further defects are identified during the work, we discuss their implications and any additional cost. We will not reconnect a circuit that is unsafe simply to meet an expected finish time.
A consumer unit upgrade can be a focused improvement without becoming a whole-house renovation. Suitable existing wiring may remain, subject to the assessment and testing needed for reconnection.
For help separating the board change from wider cable renewal, see our consumer unit replacement or full rewire guide before agreeing which parts of the installation will remain.
We review the relevant circuits, supply arrangements and available records. An Electrical Installation Condition Report, previous certificates and information about earlier alterations can help establish the starting point.
In line with industry best practice, we recommend an EICR before a planned consumer unit replacement. If a full EICR is not being carried out, a suitable pre-work assessment, including appropriate inspection and testing, is still needed before we proceed.
Any necessary remedial work should be distinguished from optional additions. If the findings indicate substantial wiring renewal, we explain that wider requirement. You can read about our St John’s Wood house rewiring service if a more extensive project is being considered.
Protection explained clearly
You do not need to specify the protective devices yourself. We explain the proposed arrangement in relation to the circuits it will serve and the applicable requirements of BS 7671.
RCD protection detects current leaking away from its intended path and disconnects the affected supply to help reduce electric-shock risk. An RCBO combines this function with protection against overloads and short circuits on an individual circuit.
Surge protection has a different purpose: helping to limit short-lived overvoltages that can damage connected equipment. It is not a backup power supply.
The design should also account for any confirmed electrical additions. Mention a planned kitchen appliance or other new equipment before the board is specified. Space for another circuit does not, by itself, confirm that the existing supply and cables can support it.
Access, finishes and the working area
In a St John’s Wood house, the consumer unit may be close to fitted storage or in a part of the property that is normally kept locked. In a flat, access to the supply equipment may depend on a managing agent or a communal cupboard.
Before the visit, establish who can provide that access and whether any building working-hours restrictions apply. Let us know about delicate finishes around the board or listed-building considerations that could affect the proposed work.
We may need access beyond the board itself to inspect and test the relevant circuits. Clear working space and access to agreed rooms help the appointment proceed without avoidable interruptions.
You do not need to open electrical enclosures or investigate the supply. Leave those checks to the electrician; your part is to tell us about access arrangements and anything that may need coordinating.
Restoring power is part of completing the job, not a substitute for inspection and testing. We verify the replacement, identify the circuits and explain the controls you will use on the new consumer unit.
Where the agreed work includes checks on connected equipment after power is restored, those checks are allowed for in the appointment. If an alarm, access-control system or specialist controller needs attention from its own service provider, that responsibility should be understood beforehand. Replacing the fuseboard does not automatically include servicing every system it supplies.
The replacement is documented by an Electrical Installation Certificate, with the relevant inspection and test schedules. We also explain the separate Building Regulations notification and compliance documentation for this notifiable work in England.
Keep these records with the property’s electrical documents. They describe the work completed and should be read alongside any recommendations concerning retained parts of the installation. We make clear if anything remains disconnected or requires further attention.

We quote for the assessed installation and the work required. Circuit numbers, protective devices, access and any necessary repairs all influence the price. Tell us about any requested extras so the quotation can distinguish the replacement from additional electrical work.
The power-off period depends on the installation and the checks needed before circuits can be returned to use. We discuss the expected interruption when planning your job. Allow for testing as well as the physical change of board, and flag any essential electrical needs early.
Often you can, provided the working area remains accessible and safe. However, you should expect disruption to the affected electrical services. We discuss occupancy and practical arrangements beforehand so you can decide whether staying at home is suitable.
Yes, where the retained circuits are suitable for reconnection. Assessment may identify local repairs rather than a complete rewire. If more extensive work is necessary, we explain the findings and separate that decision from the consumer unit replacement itself.
In line with industry best practice, we recommend an EICR before a planned consumer unit replacement. If a full EICR is not being carried out, a suitable pre-work assessment, including appropriate inspection and testing, is still needed before we proceed. We explain its scope beforehand.
Not necessarily. A new board cannot be relied on to cure a fault elsewhere in the installation or in an appliance. Tell us when the tripping happens and which equipment is in use so the underlying problem can be investigated.
The Electrical Installation Certificate records the replacement and its inspection and test results. Building Regulations compliance documentation is provided through the separate notification process. We explain how you will receive these records and what work they cover.
Yes, these form part of our St John’s Wood service area. Please give us the full address and postcode when enquiring, together with the property type and any building access arrangements. This is especially helpful on streets crossing into neighbouring postcode districts.
Yes. PEP installs new consumer units within agreed residential refurbishment and rewiring projects, as well as replacing existing boards. We assess the supply, proposed circuits and any wiring to be retained before specifying the equipment. An additional board or relocation is considered separately where the project requires it.
Talk to PEP
Tell us your postcode and whether you need a new consumer unit, a replacement or board work within a refurbishment or rewire. If there is no existing board, send your project plans and the proposed position. For an existing installation, photographs of the closed board and its surroundings are helpful. Do not remove covers or expose electrical parts to take photographs.
If safe to take, a photograph of the closed board and a wider view of its position are helpful. Keep covers in place and do not expose wiring to obtain a better picture.
We will explain what we need to assess and how to move your enquiry towards a quotation.
