02 · Understand the whole quotation
The quotation depends on whether this is a new consumer unit installation or a replacement, the circuit schedule, protection required and any agreed wiring or access work. These items are explained before installation; a board-only price should not be assumed to include new circuits or remedial work.
The cost depends on the installation, not simply the size of the box on the wall. Two boards that look similar can serve very different circuit arrangements.

The quotation should make clear what is included, how VAT is treated and what falls outside the agreed scope. Joinery, plaster repairs, decoration and work involving supply equipment need particular attention.

03 · Location, dimensions and access
A consumer unit tucked inside a hallway cupboard may appear simple to replace until the available space is measured.
The new enclosure needs suitable access for installation, operation and future maintenance. Its dimensions, cable-entry positions and the surrounding joinery all matter.
If you are redesigning storage or changing the hallway layout, involve us before the new cupboard is made. Designing the joinery first can leave insufficient room for the electrical installation.
Moving a consumer unit is a separate decision. It can affect cable routes, connections, access and the amount of making good required. The neatest-looking position is not necessarily the most practical.

04 · Assess what is already there
Replacing a consumer unit does not automatically mean rewiring the property. It also does not make defective wiring suitable to retain.
Our assessment establishes which circuits can be connected to the new board and whether repairs or cable replacement are needed.
Electrical Safety First recommends a condition report before a planned replacement. Where that is not undertaken, its guidance calls for a pre-work survey; proceeding without the necessary assessment is not an appropriate shortcut. Read the Electrical Safety First guidance.

05 · A purpose for every protective device
A good specification explains the purpose of the protection, rather than simply listing abbreviations.
An RCD detects certain leakage currents and disconnects the supply to reduce electric-shock risk. An RCBO combines residual-current protection with overload and short-circuit protection for an individual circuit.
An appropriately designed RCBO arrangement can help limit the loss of power when a fault occurs on one circuit. It does not repair damaged wiring or guarantee that an installation will never trip.
Surge protective devices help protect an installation and connected equipment against transient overvoltages. They perform a different role from RCDs and RCBOs; one is not a substitute for the other. NICEIC’s consumer unit guide explains these devices.
Device types, compatibility and any requirements for additional protection, including arc-fault detection, are considered as part of the design.

06 · Plan around the actual property
The work starts at your consumer unit, but access arrangements can extend beyond your front door.
In a converted house, the board inside a flat may be separate from the meter or intake equipment elsewhere in the building. Keys, managing-agent arrangements and access to common areas may need to be organised before the appointment.
For a house, the practical questions may concern a crowded under-stairs cupboard, finished hallway joinery or equipment added during previous alterations.
Tell us whether your home is occupied, rented or part of a larger refurbishment. If alterations affect common parts or protected building fabric, the relevant permissions also need to be established.
We plan around the actual property. A Queen’s Park address does not mean every home has the same installation or access restrictions.
07 · Think beyond the changeover
A board replacement is a useful point to discuss electrical work already on your horizon.
An induction hob, additional oven, new utility area or garden supply may change the circuit requirements. Planning these needs together can help avoid specifying a board that immediately needs reconsideration.
However, spare spaces in a consumer unit are not the same as spare capacity in the electricity supply. Proposed loads, circuit design and supply arrangements need their own assessment.

09 · From the first enquiry to the final checks
Start with your postcode, property type, board location and reason for replacement. Mention any planned electrical additions and known problems.
A photograph of the closed board and its surroundings can help the initial discussion. Do not remove covers or touch damaged equipment to obtain a better picture.
We review the relevant installation, confirm the proposed equipment and identify any associated work. The scope includes access, isolation arrangements and the planned interruption.
Where other parties control supply equipment or communal access, the necessary arrangements are clarified.
The work is organised around safe isolation, the agreed specification and suitable connections to retained circuits. Findings that affect the scope are explained.
If a circuit cannot safely be reconnected, it may need to remain disconnected until the necessary work is completed.
The replacement and relevant circuits are inspected and tested, the circuit schedule is completed and the installation is labelled.

10 · Know what you will receive
In England, replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Building Regulations. The notification route should be clear before the installation begins. GOV.UK identifies fuse box replacement as notifiable work.
The handover includes an Electrical Installation Certificate, with the relevant inspection and test records, together with the circuit information for the work completed.
Building Regulations compliance documentation is separate from that installation certificate. An EICR is a different document again: it reports on the condition of an existing installation rather than certifying the design, construction and verification of the new work.
The records should explain what was done. That remains useful when you later arrange another alteration, discuss the installation with a new electrician or prepare information about the property.
11 · One coordinated plan
