A warm hallway and a cold living room. Upstairs radiators that heat quickly while downstairs takes much longer. A replacement boiler that has not resolved the uneven heating you hoped it would.

These problems deserve a clear explanation before you commit to a solution.

PEP provides powerflushing in Hammersmith W6, helping homeowners address sludge and circulation problems in suitable central heating systems. We assess the installation, agree the cleaning scope and check its operation afterwards — with careful planning around your property and its occupants.

From houses around Ravenscourt Park to converted flats near Hammersmith Grove, the aim is straightforward: identify what is restricting performance and carry out the work that the system actually needs.

01 · Understand the pattern

One cold room, one restricted circuit — or a wider system problem?

Start with the symptomsA cold radiator does not identify the cause.

The pattern matters.

If one radiator remains cold while the others work normally, the cause may be local: a sticking valve, trapped air, restricted pipework or a problem with how water is distributed. When several radiators heat poorly, particularly alongside evidence of contamination, a wider system clean may be appropriate.

A cold lower section can suggest deposits inside a radiator, but temperature patterns alone do not confirm the diagnosis. Radiator faults can have several causes, as Vaillant’s guidance explains.

We consider:

  • Which rooms and radiators are affected.
  • Whether the problem is recent or longstanding.
  • What changes have been made to the heating.
  • The condition of accessible valves, pipework and filtration.
  • Available evidence about system-water quality and circulation.

Powerflushing removes contamination. It does not repair a failed pump, replace a faulty valve or correct an unsuitable pipe layout.

For a fuller explanation of the symptoms and alternatives, read our guide to when a heating system needs a powerflush.

02 · Work around the home

Planned around Hammersmith homes, not a standard property template

The practical arrangements can be as important as the cleaning method.

In a house, we may need access across several floors and to radiators behind furniture. In a converted flat, the boiler, water supply and suitable working connections may be in different rooms. A managed apartment may require access arrangements and a clear understanding of which heating components belong to the flat.

Before the visit, we establish the working area, access requirements and likely interruption to heating. Hose routes and protection for floors and nearby finishes form part of that planning.

03 · Assess. Clean. Protect.

What happens during a powerflush?

Powerflushing combines controlled circulation with suitable cleaning treatment to remove deposits from the heating circuit. The important mechanism is water flow, not the high-pressure action associated with drain jetting. Kamco explains this distinction.

The precise method depends on the system and its condition.

01

Establish the starting point

We review the reported symptoms and accessible installation before cleaning begins. Existing leaks, damaged components or severely restricted sections may change the recommended approach.

This also gives us a useful basis for comparing the heating’s behaviour afterwards.

02

Prepare the property and connections

We agree access to the boiler, radiators and working connections, protect the immediate area and plan the equipment position.

The connection method is selected for the installation. Appliance requirements and any components needing isolation or protection are considered before circulation starts.

03

Clean the relevant circuits

Appropriate cleaning treatment and circulation are used to mobilise deposits. Work is directed through the relevant radiators or sections, rather than relying on water taking the easiest route around the system.

Flow reversal can assist the process where suitable for the equipment and installation. The cleaning time and approach respond to the condition found, not simply the number of minutes the machine has been running. Fernox’s equipment guidance describes targeted circulation and reversible flow.

04

Rinse and protect

Loosened contamination and cleaning residues must be removed before the system is left in service. Suitable inhibitor is then added at the required concentration for the system and product.

Cleaning, rinsing and ongoing protection are distinct parts of the work; adding fresh inhibitor alone is not a substitute for removing accumulated contamination. Fernox sets out these separate stages.

05

Restore operation

We restore the installation to its normal operating arrangement and check how the heating responds. Any remaining fault or restriction is explained, together with the recommended next step.

04 · Condition before assumptions

Older radiators, microbore and mixed heating systems

Age alone does not decide whether an installation can be cleaned. Condition, layout and the nature of the restriction matter more.

Microbore pipework is not automatically unsuitable for powerflushing, but narrow or heavily obstructed sections can require a different approach and additional time. Cleaning cannot guarantee that a completely blocked section will become serviceable.

With older radiators, removing deposits may reveal corrosion damage that was already present. We consider that risk before recommending work; a badly deteriorated component may need replacement rather than further cleaning. Kamco discusses both microbore limitations and pre-existing corrosion.

Where radiators and wet underfloor heating share a heat source, we identify the separate circuits, controls and treatment requirements. We do not assume the radiator circuit and every floor loop should be handled identically.

If the main symptom is a cold floor or an unresponsive zone, our guide to underfloor heating that is not working explains the broader diagnostic considerations.

05 · A quotation with a defined scope

How much does powerflushing in Hammersmith cost?

A useful quotation describes the job, not just a radiator count.

The cost depends on the number of radiators and zones, the system’s condition, access to connections and the time needed to deal with restrictions. A straightforward single-circuit installation is a different proposition from a multi-floor property with difficult access and several heating zones.

Your quotation should make clear:

  • Which parts of the installation are included.
  • The cleaning treatment and system protection.
  • Whether cleaning an existing filter is included.
  • Whether a new filter or replacement components are proposed.
  • Any repairs that need separate approval.
  • Relevant access or parking arrangements.
  • The applicable VAT position and total price.

Cleaning an existing magnetic filter and supplying a new one are different items. Likewise, a powerflush is not an open-ended agreement to replace valves, pumps or radiators.

We explain the proposed scope before work begins. If the assessment identifies a more appropriate repair, that recommendation comes first.

06 · One coordinated installation package

Replacing the boiler? Keep the cleaning in the same plan.

A new boiler and the existing heating circuit need to be considered together.

PEP includes a full-system PowerFlush with its boiler replacements, alongside appropriate system protection, inhibitor and water-condition checks. If you are already arranging a replacement with us, the cleaning should be coordinated within that agreed package, not booked again as a duplicate service.

PEP is a Vaillant Advance Installer and a Viessmann Trained Installer. We bring boiler selection, compatible controls and system preparation into the same installation plan.

See our boiler installation service in Hammersmith for the current package and qualifying manufacturer cover. Boiler guarantees and warranties apply to the relevant installation package; they are not a separate warranty on standalone powerflushing.

07 · Check the water. Check the heating.

The result needs checking — not just a photograph of dirty water

Visible debris helps explain what has been removed. It does not, on its own, demonstrate that the entire job is complete.

Equally, water that looks clear may still lack adequate inhibitor protection. Fernox’s system-water guidance explicitly distinguishes cleanliness from protection.

Our handover focuses on the installation you will use:

  • How the affected radiators respond after cleaning.
  • Whether accessible connections remain sound.
  • The water treatment applied.
  • Relevant checks appropriate to the treatment products.
  • Any remaining uneven heating or component problem.
  • Recommended follow-up maintenance.

We distinguish improved circulation from a separate need for adjustment or repair. You should know what has been achieved and whether anything remains outstanding.

Before arranging the work

Questions before booking

Does one cold radiator mean I need a full powerflush?

Not necessarily. A local valve or circulation problem may affect one radiator while the rest of the system remains satisfactory. We assess the pattern and available evidence before recommending a whole-system clean.

Can you powerflush a converted or leasehold flat?

We can assess a flat with its own heating installation, subject to access and system suitability. Leasehold or managed properties may also require coordination with the owner or managing agent. We establish those arrangements before the work.

What if my apartment has communal heating?

Tell us when you enquire. We need to establish whether the problem is within your private heating circuit or relates to shared equipment. Access to an apartment does not authorise intervention on communal plant or pipework.

How long will I be without heating?

The interruption depends on the agreed work, system size and condition. We explain the expected duration before booking. Whether hot water is also affected depends on the installation; please flag any essential heating or hot-water needs when contacting us.

Will every radiator need to come off the wall?

Not routinely: suitable systems can be powerflushed with radiators in place. A severely restricted or damaged radiator may need separate attention. Any proposed removal or replacement is discussed rather than assumed to be included. Fernox confirms that in-situ cleaning is possible.

Does the service include a new magnetic filter?

Only where supply and installation are included in your quotation. Inspecting or cleaning an existing filter is different from fitting a new one. We make the scope clear before you accept the work.

Will powerflushing solve every cold spot?

No. It can address contamination-related restrictions, but it cannot correct every mechanical, control or design problem. If cleaning leaves a separate issue unresolved, we explain the evidence and the next appropriate action.

Is PowerFlush included when PEP replaces my boiler?

Yes. Our boiler replacement package includes a full-system PowerFlush and appropriate system protection. The installation quotation confirms the scope, together with any separately identified repairs or alterations.

A clear next step for your heating

Tell us what your heating is doing

You do not need to diagnose the problem before getting in touch.

Send us your Hammersmith postcode, the approximate number of radiators and which rooms are affected. Let us know whether the property has its own boiler or shared heating, if known, and mention any recent installation work or repairs.

Accessible photographs can help us understand the arrangement — there is no need to remove covers or disturb components.

We will review the information and explain the next step towards an appropriate assessment and quotation.
