Whether you are replacing an electric cylinder in an apartment or reviewing stored hot water alongside a boiler, we establish what the property can support before specifying equipment. That means checking the water supply, household demand, access and safety arrangements — then explaining the work in a clear quotation.

01 · Start with what needs to change

A replacement cylinder, a different layout or more hot water?

Replacing an existing hot-water cylinder

A leaking vessel or storage that no longer meets demand may justify replacement. But an immersion heater, valve, control fault or restricted supply can also cause disappointing performance. The first question is whether the cylinder itself needs changing.

Where replacement is appropriate, we review the surrounding equipment and connections. A similar-sized unit does not automatically make the whole job like-for-like.

Planning hot water during a refurbishment

A new bathroom, altered cupboard or changed floor plan can affect capacity, pipe routes and maintenance access. Planning these together avoids discovering that the chosen cylinder cannot be installed or serviced once the joinery is finished.

For a wider renovation, we can coordinate the work with your plumbing installation in Earl’s Court.

Moving from vented to unvented storage

A conversion changes how the hot-water system is supplied and protected. We assess existing pipework, fittings and the heat source before deciding what can remain. A separate heating feed-and-expansion cistern may still be required; converting the hot water does not automatically convert the heating circuit. Our vented-to-unvented conversion guide explains the distinction.

02 · The installation has to fit the building

Cylinder replacement in Earl’s Court flats and period homes

In a converted flat near Nevern Square or a home around Earl’s Court Square, the route to the cylinder cupboard deserves attention before a replacement is ordered. Door openings, stair turns, communal entrances and finished floors all affect how equipment can be brought in and removed.

We consider the space needed for the cylinder and its associated equipment, the support beneath it, and access to serviceable components. A unit that fits inside a cupboard is not necessarily one that can be installed and maintained there.

Shared buildings introduce another question: which services belong to the flat, and which require coordination with someone else? We establish the arrangements for isolation, access and any proposed work affecting shared services or building fabric. Where necessary, permissions and responsibilities are agreed with the owner, freeholder or managing agent before work starts.

If hot water comes from a communal system or heat interface unit, we identify that arrangement first. It should not be treated as a private cylinder replacement simply because the equipment occupies a similar cupboard.

03 · Check the supply before making promises

Stored hot water is only part of the performance

An unvented cylinder stores water under pressure, but it does not create an unlimited supply. The incoming water and distribution pipework must be able to support the intended use.

We assess available pressure and flow under demand, rather than relying only on a reading with every outlet closed. The household’s routine matters too: two bathrooms used separately create a different requirement from two showers running together.

The specification brings together stored volume, reheating performance and the supply available at the outlets. Our guide to water pressure and flow in London homes explains why those are different considerations.

If the supply is restricted, water-pressure boosting options may merit a separate assessment. A booster is not included by default, and a larger cylinder alone will not remove a restriction.

04 · Choose the arrangement, then the model

Direct electric and boiler-fed unvented cylinders

Direct electric cylinders for apartments

A direct cylinder heats stored water using immersion heaters. It can suit a flat without a boiler connection, provided its capacity, electrical installation and controls match the requirement.

We consider normal heating and boost operation, available circuits and the intended schedule. If you use an off-peak tariff, the controls need to suit its actual hours and the selected equipment. The presence of a timer does not, by itself, establish how the cylinder is being heated.

Indirect cylinders connected to a boiler

An indirect cylinder receives heat through a coil from an external heat source. With a boiler-fed arrangement, the cylinder’s recovery, available boiler output and controls must work together.

A suitable, serviceable boiler may remain. Where both appliances need changing, we can coordinate the project with boiler installation in Earl’s Court. Boiler and cylinder warranties remain separate. A heat-pump installation also needs a cylinder specified for that application, rather than an assumption that any indirect model will suit.

Megaflo installation and other suitable cylinders

If you are considering a Megaflo installation in Earl’s Court, we assess the relevant model against your home and existing equipment. Megaflo is a product range, not a generic name for every unvented cylinder. The choice should account for usable capacity, dimensions, recovery, expansion arrangements and future maintenance.

05 · Useful capacity, workable access

The right size is not simply the largest cylinder that fits

We ask about occupancy, baths and showers, simultaneous use and the time available to reheat the water. Bedrooms alone do not tell us how much stored hot water a household needs.

A slimline model may help with a narrow footprint, but height, connections and clearance still need checking. Moving the cylinder can also change pipe routes and the discharge arrangement, so relocation should be assessed as a design decision rather than a small addition to the quote.

For a larger refurbishment, the cylinder can form part of a coordinated central heating and plant-room installation in Earl’s Court, with space reserved for the equipment and the person who will maintain it.

06 · The connections matter as much as the vessel

Pipework, safety discharge and controls planned together

The installation includes more than the visible cylinder. Associated valves, expansion provision, insulation and the route for safety discharge must be appropriate for the selected system. Existing arrangements need checking rather than being accepted because they were already there.

Electrical supplies, isolation, immersion controls and any boiler interfaces are considered alongside the plumbing. PEP’s electrical services in Earl’s Court allow those requirements to be coordinated within the agreed project.

Where hot-water scheduling forms part of wider heating controls, compatibility and safety functions take priority over an app or thermostat choice. Our heating and hot-water controls guide explains the broader options.

07 · Know what the quotation covers

Unvented cylinder installation cost in Earl’s Court

A straightforward replacement and a conversion involving new pipe routes, electrical work or a different location are not the same job. We price the assessed scope, with additional work and exclusions made clear.

Your quotation should identify:

  • The cylinder model, capacity and required associated equipment.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing cylinder, where included.
  • Pipework alterations, insulation and safety-discharge work.
  • Electrical connections, controls and any necessary upgrades.
  • Testing, commissioning and the applicable documentation.
  • Access arrangements, making good, VAT and any exclusions.

Work to shared services, joinery, decoration or the incoming supply should not be assumed to be included unless the quotation says so. Manufacturer warranty terms are confirmed for the selected product; vessel, component and labour cover may differ.

08 · From assessment to working hot water

A clear installation sequence and a proper handover

Agree the scope before ordering

We establish the existing arrangement, intended demand and practical constraints, then confirm the proposed equipment and work. Any building-management coordination is identified before the installation date is agreed.

Plan the interruption and complete the work

We discuss access and the expected interruption to hot water. Timing depends on the installation: a replacement in the same position differs from relocating equipment or converting the system. The agreed scope guides removal, installation and connection work.

Commission, document and explain

Installation and commissioning require competence in unvented hot-water systems. The applicable Building Regulations notification or certification route is addressed as part of the job. Handover covers the commissioning record, operating instructions and relevant compliance documents, together with the controls and product-care requirements.

We explain the intended heating schedule and any boost function. Ongoing maintenance follows the manufacturer’s requirements; our unvented cylinder servicing guide explains why those checks remain important after installation.

09 · One coordinated scope

Why work with PEP?

A cylinder replacement can involve plumbing, heating, electrics and the way a building is managed. PEP brings those installation disciplines together, so connections and responsibilities can be agreed before work starts.

Our focus is the completed arrangement: appropriate equipment, workable service access, coordinated controls and a quotation that explains the scope. We do not assume every project needs a larger cylinder, a new boiler or a booster.

See our London heating and plant-room work for examples of the wider installations we undertake. Earl’s Court forms part of our unvented cylinder installation service in London.

10 · Earl’s Court and the SW5 neighbourhoods

Unvented hot-water installations across Earl’s Court SW5

We cover homes around Earl’s Court Square, Nevern Square, Philbeach Gardens and Kenway Road, together with the SW5 addresses around Courtfield Gardens, Barkston Gardens and Bramham Gardens.

For properties towards West Brompton or on the edges of Kensington and Fulham, send the exact postcode when enquiring. Access, shared services and any property-specific restrictions are assessed for the address, rather than assumed from the neighbourhood name.

11 · Your questions

Unvented cylinder installation: questions from homeowners

Can you replace the cylinder without replacing my boiler?

Often, yes. We check the retained boiler’s suitability, the cylinder specification and controls. Replacing one appliance does not automatically require replacing both.

Is an unvented cylinder suitable for a flat in Earl’s Court?

It may be. Suitability depends on the water supply, demand, space, support, safety-discharge route and building arrangements. We assess these before recommending an installation.

Will a new cylinder improve weak shower pressure?

Not necessarily. A supply restriction or distribution problem may remain after replacement. We identify the limiting factor before promising an improvement.

Can you replace a direct electric cylinder and its controls?

Yes. We assess the cylinder, electrical supply, isolation and control arrangement together, with any required changes included in the agreed scope.

Can a slimline cylinder fit my existing cupboard?

Possibly, but diameter is only one measurement. Height, connection space, access for installation and later component replacement also matter.

What if the water supply is shared with other flats?

We establish the shared-system boundary and how the work can be isolated. Access or shutdowns involving other properties need the appropriate coordination before installation.

What size cylinder do I need for two bathrooms?

That depends on how the bathrooms are used, the fittings, occupancy, reheating and supply. Two bathrooms alone are not enough information to specify a capacity.

What is included in the installation price?

The written quotation defines the equipment, installation work, disposal, commissioning and documentation, alongside VAT and exclusions. Relocation, electrical upgrades or shared-service work should be identified explicitly.

How long will the hot water be off, and what paperwork will I receive?

We discuss the interruption after assessing the scope. Handover includes the commissioning record, instructions and applicable compliance documentation. We do not promise one fixed duration for every replacement.

Does a fault mean the entire cylinder needs replacing?

No. Some problems concern the controls, immersion heater, valves or supply rather than the vessel. Assessment helps distinguish a repair from a justified replacement.
