Replacing a cylinder should leave you with more than a new tank in the same cupboard. It should give you a suitable hot-water arrangement, accessible equipment and a proper handover. We assess what your home needs, explain what can stay and identify what must change.

01 · Establish the right job

What needs to change in your hot-water system?

A cylinder that needs replacing

If the storage vessel has failed or no longer suits the household, replacement may be the right answer. An immersion heater, thermostat, valve or supply restriction can also cause problems, however. We distinguish a cylinder replacement from a fault that may be resolved without changing the vessel.

A home with different demands

An additional shower, a loft bathroom or a changed household routine may expose the limits of the existing arrangement. We consider how the outlets will be used, rather than simply fitting the largest cylinder available. During a renovation, the work can sit alongside your plumbing installation in Shepherd’s Bush.

A move away from tank-fed hot water

Converting a vented system involves assessing the retained pipework, fittings and heat source as well as selecting a cylinder. Removing a cold-water storage cistern does not automatically mean that a separate heating feed-and-expansion cistern can go too. Our vented-to-unvented conversion guide explains the wider changes.

02 · Houses, conversions and apartments

A hot-water plan for your W12 house or flat

Across Shepherd’s Bush, the address alone does not tell us what is behind the cupboard door. An extended house around Askew Road, a converted flat near the Green and an apartment in White City can present quite different installation requirements.

For a house being extended or refurbished

We consider the existing and proposed bathrooms together, including the busiest part of the day. The cylinder location needs to work with the new layout, pipe routes and future access. It is worth settling that arrangement before cupboards and finishes are completed.

For a flat with its own cylinder

Access starts at the building entrance, not at the cylinder. Stairs, lifts, doorways and the route for removing the old equipment need checking. We also establish whether isolation and relevant pipework serve only your flat or affect other occupants.

For a managed building or communal system

Some apartments receive heat or hot water through communal arrangements, including heat interface units. An HIU is not simply another type of private hot-water cylinder. We identify the equipment and responsibility for it before recommending work. Where the lease or proposed alterations require consent, the relevant permissions and access arrangements need to be in place.

03 · Capacity is only one part of performance

Check the supply, storage and recovery together

An unvented cylinder stores hot water supplied under pressure. It cannot compensate for every limitation in the incoming supply. A good reading with the taps closed does not tell you how the installation will behave when two showers are running.

We assess available pressure and flow under demand, intended simultaneous use, usable storage and the rate at which the water can be reheated. A household taking several showers one after another has different requirements from one using two bathrooms at once.

For background, see our guide to water pressure and flow in London homes. If the assessment identifies a supply limitation, water-pressure boosting options can be considered separately. A booster is not a default part of cylinder replacement.

04 · Match the equipment to the arrangement

Direct electric, indirect and Megaflo cylinder options

Direct electric cylinders

A direct cylinder uses immersion heaters to heat the stored water. For a flat without a suitable boiler connection, we assess the cylinder capacity alongside the electrical supply, isolation, heating schedule and boost controls.

Off-peak operation must match the actual tariff and wiring arrangement; a timer alone does not establish how the system is supplied. We can coordinate the required work with our electrical services in Shepherd’s Bush.

Indirect cylinders and a retained boiler

An indirect cylinder receives heat from an external source through a coil. In a boiler-fed installation, the boiler, cylinder recovery and control sequence need to be compatible.

You do not necessarily need a new boiler with a new cylinder. We assess the existing equipment first. Where both need replacing, our boiler installation service in W12 allows the specification to be considered together. Any future heat-pump arrangement requires a cylinder and controls selected for that application.

Megaflo installation and replacement

We can assess a Megaflo installation or replacement in Shepherd’s Bush alongside other suitable unvented options. Megaflo is a specific product range, not a name for every pressurised cylinder. Model selection should reflect your usage, installation space and heating arrangement, rather than brand or nominal capacity alone.

Our London unvented cylinder installation service explains the wider range of projects we undertake.

05 · Define the work around the cylinder

What stays, what changes and what needs access?

A replacement can retain suitable parts of the existing installation. It should not inherit unsuitable connections or inaccessible components simply to look like a quick swap. We define the work around the selected cylinder before ordering it.

Part of the installationWhat the assessment establishes
Cylinder and locationSuitable capacity, dimensions, support and a workable delivery and removal route.
Existing pipeworkWhich connections can remain and where alterations or insulation are needed.
Valves and safety dischargeAppropriate protection and expansion provision, with a suitable, accessible discharge arrangement.
Electrical supplies and controlsWhat is required for the heaters, isolation, scheduling and any boiler interface.
Access and surrounding finishesSpace for maintenance and any joinery, opening-up or making-good work to agree separately.

A slimline model may solve a footprint problem but still need height and service space that the cupboard cannot provide. For a wider refurbishment, our central heating and plant-room installations in Shepherd’s Bush bring equipment layout into the overall design.

06 · Compare the complete scope

What affects cylinder replacement costs in Shepherd’s Bush?

The price depends on more than the cylinder’s capacity. Replacing equipment in an accessible position is different from relocating it, changing the heating method or converting a tank-fed system.

PEP prepares a quotation around the assessed installation. It sets out the proposed equipment and work, including:

  • The cylinder model, capacity and associated components.
  • Removal and disposal of the old equipment, where included.
  • Plumbing, safety-discharge and electrical alterations.
  • Controls, commissioning and the relevant handover documents.
  • Access requirements, VAT, exclusions and any separately agreed work.

Incoming supply upgrades, work to communal services, joinery and redecoration should never be assumed to be included. Product warranty terms are also specific to the selected cylinder; vessel, component and labour cover can differ.

Discuss the scope of your cylinder replacement

07 · Organise the changeover

Plan the installation before the hot water is switched off

Start with the existing setup

Tell us what needs improving and send photographs of the cylinder and surrounding space if available. Include your postcode and any plans for new bathrooms. Photos help us prepare, but they do not replace the measurements and checks needed to specify the installation.

Agree equipment, access and interruption

Once the arrangement is assessed, we confirm the scope and discuss the programme. That includes access, any building-management coordination and the expected period without hot water. The programme reflects the actual work, rather than a fixed promise for every property.

Install, test and explain

We complete the agreed connections and commission the installation, then explain normal operation and the documents being handed over. If cylinder controls need to work with a wider heating system, our heating and hot-water controls guide provides useful background.

08 · Safe installation, useful records

Safety and care after installation

Unvented hot-water work requires the appropriate competence. The installation must address safety devices, temperature controls and discharge, with the applicable Building Regulations notification or certification process. Gas Safe registration alone is not a substitute for competence in unvented systems.

PEP provides the relevant commissioning and handover information, together with the applicable compliance documentation through the appropriate route. We explain the controls, maintenance requirements and warranty conditions for the installed equipment.

Keep those records accessible for future maintenance. Our unvented cylinder servicing guide explains what ongoing care involves. Unexpected leakage or discharge needs professional assessment; safety outlets must not be blocked or bypassed.

09 · One coordinated installation

Why choose PEP for your hot-water project?

The awkward parts of a cylinder project often sit between trades: a cupboard that needs a different layout, an electrical supply that needs reviewing or controls that must work with a retained boiler.

PEP brings plumbing, heating and electrical work into one coordinated scope. We can plan a standalone cylinder replacement or integrate it into a larger renovation, without treating the equipment and its connections as unrelated jobs.

You can see our London heating and plant-room work for a closer look at our installation experience. For your own project, the recommendation starts with the existing conditions and the result you need.

10 · Local coverage

Shepherd’s Bush, White City and surrounding W12 streets

We cover Shepherd’s Bush and the surrounding W12 neighbourhoods, including the Green and Market, Askew Road and Askew Village, Wendell Park, Cathnor Park, Coningham Road, Lime Grove, White City, Wood Lane and Wormholt.

For addresses near Goldhawk Road or Old Oak, please send the full postcode so we can confirm the location and project requirements. Coverage includes W12 0, W12 7, W12 8 and W12 9; neighbouring postcode districts are not interchangeable with W12.

11 · Before you book

Questions about unvented cylinders in W12

Can you replace the cylinder and keep my boiler?

Often, yes. We check whether the boiler and its controls remain suitable for the proposed cylinder and recovery requirement. A cylinder replacement is not, by itself, a reason to replace a working boiler.

Can you replace a direct electric cylinder in a flat?

Yes. The assessment covers the storage requirement, electrical supplies, controls, water connections and access. Any shared-service or building-management constraints also need to be understood before the work is agreed.

What if I do not know whether I have a cylinder or an HIU?

Send a photograph of the equipment and any visible identification label without removing covers. We can use that to establish the next step. Communal heating equipment should not be booked as a private cylinder replacement without checking the arrangement.

Will a larger cylinder make my shower more powerful?

Not necessarily. More storage can help with the quantity of hot water available, but pressure and flow also depend on the supply and distribution. We identify which limitation needs addressing before recommending equipment.

Can an unvented cylinder supply two showers together?

It can where the complete installation supports their combined demand. The shower flow rates, available supply, stored water and recovery all matter. Choosing a cylinder by litres alone does not answer the question.

Can you fit a slimline cylinder in the existing cupboard?

Possibly. We need to check the model’s dimensions, connection positions, service clearances and access route. A narrower cylinder is not necessarily shorter, easier to remove or suitable for the existing arrangement.

What happens if the water supply is shared with other flats?

We establish how the relevant services can be isolated and who needs to agree any changes. Work affecting a shared supply may need coordination with the freeholder, managing agent or other occupants.

What should I look for when comparing replacement quotes?

Compare the named equipment, connection work, safety provisions, electrics, removal, commissioning, documents, VAT and exclusions. Two quotes for a similar cylinder can cover substantially different amounts of work.

How long will we be without hot water?

We discuss the expected interruption once the scope and access are understood. A straightforward replacement differs from a relocation or conversion. Any additional works needed before normal service resumes should be clear in the programme.

What documents will I receive?

The relevant commissioning records, product and operating information, and applicable Building Regulations compliance documentation through the appropriate process. We also explain servicing and warranty requirements so you know what needs attention after installation.
